Bolnhurst - Bedfordshire, UK

Summary

Location: Bedfordshire, United Kingdom

Project commenced: Mid-2025

Purpose: Municipal Water Treatment for discharge into local waterways

Treatment Volume: < 200kL/day

About the Project

The Bolnhurst Water Recycling Centre upgrade showcases an innovative, low-carbon approach to nutrient removal and wastewater treatment. Delivered by Anglian Water's @one Alliance, the project was designed to meet stringent new phosphorus discharge requirements while overcoming the challenges of a constrained site footprint and ageing infrastructure.

Key Features

  • First large-scale algae-based phosphorus removal system at the site

  • Chemical-free treatment process supporting lower operational carbon

  • Modular, prefabricated design enabling delivery on a constrained footprint.

  • Enhanced water quality outcomes through compliance with a 0.5 mg/L phosphorus consent.

  • Supports resource recovery and circular economy principles through beneficial reuse of algal biomass.

This pioneering project demonstrates how innovative, nature-based treatment technologies can help utilities meet increasingly stringent environmental standards while reducing carbon, energy use and reliance on chemical treatment processes.
