ALGAESYS Reflects on a Transformative Week at the SEABX Trade Mission
ALGAESYS AU has just returned from an intensive and inspiring week as part of Austrade’s Strategic Agribusiness Partnerships to Indonesia and Brunei (SEABX) Trade Mission, a program designed to strengthen commercial, scientific, and strategic ties across the region.
As a first-time delegate, Managing Director Soner Bekir described the experience as “eye-opening, productive, and unexpectedly fruitful,” with conversations already progressing into follow-up meetings across both countries.

Over the course of the mission, the delegation engaged with government agencies, industry leaders, local innovators, and development partners across Indonesia and Brunei. Supported by Austrade, DFAT, and the Australian High Commissions, the program offered unparalleled access to decision-makers shaping the region’s future in sustainability, food security, and infrastructure resilience.
For ALGAESYS, the mission highlighted two critical insights:
Southeast Asia is serious about sustainable water innovation.
Indonesia’s ambition to achieve food self-sufficiency and modernise water infrastructure and support climate-resilientdevelopment was clear across every meeting. There is strong appetite for decentralised, low-energy, nature-based wastewater treatment, especially in agriculture, tourism, aquaculture, and commercial and residential development.
Partnerships are the key to impact.
The mission reinforced the region’s openness to collaboration and the importance of long-term, trusted relationships. Brunei and Indonesia both recognise the need for speedy, practical, scalable solutions that support environmental protection, economic growth, and community wellbeing.
ALGAESYS’ nature-based, off-grid, modular wastewater systems align strongly with these priorities, offering a quick pathway to improve local water quality, protect marine environments, and deliver resource-recovery benefits.
Soner summarised the mission best:
“This trip has shown just how much opportunity exists for meaningful collaboration. We’re grateful to Austrade for making this possible, and we look forward to building on the relationships formed and contributing to sustainable water outcomes across the region.”
ALGAESYS will now begin formal engagements with organisations across Indonesia and Brunei, with the goal of establishing proof of concept projects across a range of applications and supporting government and industry partners in implementing decentralised, fit-for-purpose water solutions.
